DANGER

What is a Cross Connection and how can it affect your water supply ?.

A cross connection occurs whenever an outside source of water has the potential to enter your plumbing system. Some examples of this include:

Hoses left in swimming pools, buckets, tanks, etc.

Rain water tanks plumbed incorrectly.

Pop-up sprinkler systems and other garden watering systems that have outlets at or near ground level. These can be protected with an appropriate backflow prevention device.

If water pressure drops in our water mains for any reason (such as watermain bursts or other emergency shut downs) then any of the above situations can result in contaminated water being sucked into your house plumbing.

For your family's safety please ensure that dangerous chemicals and other external sources of water do not contaminate your domestic water supply. You can avoid this by:

Not leaving hoses in buckets of fertiliser, poisons, sprays etc., or in swimming pools.

Ensuring underground sprinkler systems are installed by licensed installers and have the correct backflow prevention device fitted.

Being careful with spray containers connected to the end of your garden hose.

Farmers - do not place hoses in spray tanks during or after filling. Always ensure that the end of the hose is above the top of the tank.
