Who Supplies Your Water

This organisation has always operated on a basis of total responsibility, and in many ways has been the leading water supply authority for regional NSW.

The expertise that has been developed at all levels has been basically retained, despite some recent downsizing, and Riverina Water looks to further challenges as Government directions lean towards removal of monopoly advantages and more stringent reporting requirement. It is expected that within a few years all water from natural sources will require a payment to the State Government by way of substantial licence fees.

Another challenge is the renewal of infrastructure, some of which pre-dates Southern Riverina County Council, but much of which was established in the 1940's and is near the end of its life.

County Council must operate as a successful business, and we have moved along this road with asset recording and scheduled replacement plans well in hand, and with our first Strategic Management Plan recently published.

Growth in water demand has been addressed over the last forty or so years, and has been met. Planning for future growth continues, particularly in Wagga Wagga residential and industrial areas. At East Bomen for instance, we have recently upgraded our capacity and could readily handle increased industrial demand.

The value of water as a finite resource is another current issue, and this organisation has been active in the "Waterwise" programme, the Wagga Wagga Urban Salinity project, and in generally promoting the use, but not the waste of water for a number of environmental reasons.
